If I was a jerk DM, I'd say... you keep stepping back into the darkness, until you fall off the clifftop. You take 10d6. (Blogrolls.) That's 32 pts, save for half, and you're completely out of the combat.
Instead, you realize the darkness goes on for a while. You find your knife. Nice round, Sherlock.

Oh, Az? Sure, you just say each round 'I attack to subdue'. No combat penalties, and you just do subdual damage instead. The catch is you gotta remember to say it every attack, or if the guy takes enough real damage, he'll die.
