Davenport Is Blob Mecca Moth, you'll have to use the fighter weapon prof to get normal spec in longsword. The thief proficiency can be used for club, sure. And yeah, 2nd circle is full of awful spells... Pyrotechnics, Flaming Sphere, Rope Trick, etc. 2nd, 4th, and 8th circle are all surprisingly bad, but 6th circle breaks the 'even-circled spells are lame' principle, as your party discovered not too long ago.
